Atoms
The structure, function and behavior of atoms!
Modeling an Atom Lesson
Answer at least 2 of the questions for your portfolio!
1. What information is on an electron cloud diagram?
2. What information is on an electron dot diagram?
3. Draw an electron cloud diagram for Neon.
4. Draw an electron dot diagram for carbon.
5. Helium is in group 18, but doesn’t have 8 dots in its’ electron dot diagram. Why?
6. What is the maximum amount of dots an element can have in an electron dot diagram?
The Periodic Table Lesson
Watch the lesson and answer any 2 of the following questions to include in your portfolio!
1. Define all the words from Ch. 19.2 & 19.3.
2. Choose any element and determine its’ number of protons, neutrons and electrons.
3. What is the one thing that is the same with all atoms of an element?
4. Why do you think there isn’t an element for 113, and why can’t we just move element 114 to that spot?
5. Why do you think the lanthanide and actinide series are placed beneath the periodic table?
6. Why do you think there are elements with names like “Mendeleevium,” “Californium” and “Einsteinium”?
The Atom Lesson
Watch the video lesson then answer all of the following questions!
1. Define all the words from Ch. 19.1. (7 words)
2. Who do you think made the most important contribution to the atomic theory? Why?
3. Thomson compared the structure of an atom to an English dessert, “plum pudding.” What food do you think most closely resembles the structure of an atom? Why?
4. What are the parts of an atom and their charges?
5. Draw a diagram of an atom and label all the parts.
6. Where you can find atoms?
Element Project
The handouts below has the directions for how to complete the “Element Project” as well as the rubric detailing how it will be graded and an example page! These handouts do NOT need to be included in your portfolio.
Making a Concept Map
The first handout describes how to construct a concept map. The second handout is an example of a concept map. You may find this to be a helpful technique for taking notes from the video lessons.
Science in Music handout
Directions to complete the “Science in Music” project, the rubric and a sample project. This handout does NOT need to be included in your portfolio!
